As part of its Memphis Centered speaker series, Rhodes is pleased to welcome Dr. Daniel Kiel who will present "Looking Backwards and Forwards at Public Education in Memphis." A lawyer, writer, filmmaker, and professor at The University of Memphis, Kiel is an authority on the historical and contemporary challenges surrounding public education in Memphis and Shelby County. He has written extensively on race, poverty and educational disparities in this area, and his film "The Memphis 13" chronicles the 1961 integration of the Memphis city schools. Additionally, he now plays a key advisory role in the plans to create a countywide public school system in Shelby County. In his Rhodes lecture, Kiel will share his thoughts about the past, present and future of public education in Memphis. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at a reception beginning at 5 p.m. For more information, please contact Charles Hughes at hughesc@rhodes.edu or 901-843-3411. |
