Lecture: "The Social Determinants of Health, Care Ethics, and Just Health Care"

   Date : Thursday, 28 February 2013       From : 5:00pm   To : 6:30pm
   Category : Lectures/Conferences/Symposia       Location : Blount/Buckman Lobby

   Event Description :
Political theorists generally defend the moral importance of health care, and argue for universal comprehensive health care, on the grounds that health care is important for saving people's lives and promoting good health. But recent literature on the social determinants of health demonstrates that health care actually does very little to save or extend lives or promote good health on a societal level. This research outlines a new justification for publicly-subsidized comprehensive health care based on care ethics.

Dr. Daniel Engster, associate professor of political science at the University of Texas at San Antonio, will come to campus to discuss his recent research on "The Social Determinants of Health, Care Ethics, and Just Health Care." A Fulbright Scholar, he is author of The Heart of Justice: Care Ethics and Political Theory.

Free and open to the public, the lecture begins at 5 p.m. in Blount Auditorium of Buckman Hall and is sponsored Rhodes’ Department of Political Science and cosponsored by the Departments of History, Philosophy, Religious Studies; the Programs in African American Studies, Search, and Urban Studies; and the Bonner Center for Faith and Service.
