Coleman, a saxophonist, and Harold Mabern, a pianist, both are alumni of Memphis’ Manassas High School.

Coleman started working with B.B. King in 1953, but is better known for his work with Miles Davis. Coleman joined Davis' band in 1963 and played with him through 1964, releasing six albums during that time. Since that time, Coleman has gone on to play with artists such as Lionel Hampton and Shirley Scott. Although retired from touring, he remains an internationally recognized musician and in 2012 was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.

The self-taught Mabern has played in Lionel Hampton's big band and alongside vocalists such as Johnny Hartman. His career as a bandleader began in 1968 with the release of "A Few Miles from Memphis," and he has gone on to release 20 albums as a leader.
