Mark Anthony Neal: "What if the Greensboro Four Had Twitter? Social Justice in the Age of Social Media and Hip-Hop"

   Date : Thursday, 7 November 2013       From : 7:00pm   To : 9:30pm
   Category : Lectures/Conferences/Symposia       Location : Blount/Buckman Lobby

   Event Description :

In this presentation, Dr. Mark Anthony Neal examines the history of social media in the Black community. The premise is that social media existed well before the digital era in slave songs, by word of mouth, on Black radio, etc. Neal contends that 1980s hip-hop is another example in the immediate previous generation of social media in the Black community before the age of Twitter. Neal answers the question, how do contemporary movements and struggles for social justice build on this tradition?

The event is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.
