Memphis Centered -"The Civil War, Memphis and Shelby Foote: An Evening with Timothy Huebner"

   Date : Wednesday, 9 October 2013       From : 5:00pm   To : 7:00pm
   Category : Lectures/Conferences/Symposia       Location : FJ-B

   Event Description :

As part of its Memphis Centered speaker series, Rhodes will spotlight one of its own—history professor Dr. Timothy Huebner—in a lively discussion of the work of novelist and historian Shelby Foote. Foote, who lived most of his life in Memphis, became internationally famous for his work on the American Civil War.

Free and open to the public, the event begins with refreshments at 5 p.m. followed by the lecture at 5:30 p.m. in Frazier Jelke B of the Frazier Jelke Science Center on campus.

Huebner, who oversees the extensive collection of Shelby Foote's papers housed at Rhodes, will discuss Foote’s celebrated (and sometimes controversial) career as a chronicler of the war’s contexts and consequences. He particularly will focus on how Foote’s ideas and career were shaped by his time in Memphis, and how his success influenced the way our city remembers the Civil War and its aftermath.

This event is presented by The Memphis Center at Rhodes College. No reservations are necessary. The Foote papers were offered to the college by Huger Foote and made possible through the generosity of Steve and Riea Lainoff.
