   Event Description :

Jeff Johnson, social commentator and Black Entertainment Television (BET) personality, will present "Pulling Back the Sheets: Hip-Hop and Sexuality" as part of Rhodes' Black History Month celebration. Johnson will discuss the exploitative nature of some popular hip-hop today, and why there needs to be more positive messages in the music. Free and open to the public, the lecture begins at 7 p.m.

Best known for his appearances on BET's "Rap City" as Cousin Jeff, Johnson also has produced his own show "The Jeff Johnson Chronicles." In addition, Source Magazine named him one of the key political players of the hip-hop generation. Johnson has served as vice president for Russell Simmons' Hip-Hop Summit Action Network and in the fall of 2007, Johnson hosted BET's "Hip-Hop vs. America" panel discussion about hip-hop as it relates to the treatment of women, crime and violence.

An alumnus of the University of Toledo where he was a political science major, Johnson has written Black and Brown: The Conversation On Race America Has Never Had due for release this year. The book explores, among other themes, Johnson's special interest in creating dialogue between the African American and Latino communities.

The lecture at Rhodes is sponsored by Rhodes' African American Studies Program, the Black Student Association and Office of Multicultural Affairs. Those with specific inquiries can contact (901) 843-3529.
