This talk by Dr. Shirletta Kinchen of the University of Louisville, will detail subject matter from her forthcoming book and examine the rise of youth and student activism and the intersection of civil rights and Black Power activism in Memphis, during the era of the Black Power Movement.

Kinchen hails from Jacksonville, Fla., and earned a bachelor's degree and masterís degree in history from Florida A&M University. She earned her Ph.D. in African American history in 2011 from The University of Memphis. Her research interests include African American social movements, the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, grassroots activism, and youth, student, and campus activism. She is particularly interested in space and place as it relates to the Black Power Movement.

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
