In this talk open to the public, Professor Jeffrey H. Jackson will tell the dramatic story of the flood of the Seine, the worst disaster in the modern history of Paris, which took place 100 years ago in January 1910. He will discuss how Parisians rallied together to save their city despite decades of political, cultural, economic, and religious division that could have torn the city apart. This presentation is based on research from Jackson’s new book Paris Under Water: How the City of Light Survived the Great Flood of 1910 published by Palgrave Macmillan. The book has received favorable reviews by the New York Times, Washington Post, and London Review of Books. Jackson is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Environmental Studies program at Rhodes. |
